Thunderbirds Sweep Friday Doubleheader

VANCOUVER, B.C. –  The University of British Columbia took both games on Friday, 4-2 and 10-3, slowing the Bushnell University offense in the Cascade Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader.

The Thunderbirds (23-15, 9-5 CCC) pitching staff combined for 29 strikeouts on the day. The Beacons (19-13, 7-3 CCC) drop two games in one day for the first time this season.

Head Coach Tommy Richards said, "It was a tough day north of the border for the Beacs. Credit to UBC who was good on the mound all day and competed really well offensively. It's a new opportunity tomorrow."

Game 1: British Columbia 4, Bushnell 2

The CCC strikeout leader Sean Heppner struck out 13 in the opener, giving up two runs on five hits in the seven-inning outing. Despite the strikeouts, the Beacons kept it close, trailing by no more than three runs in the game.

The Thunderbirds held an early 3-0 advantage through two innings before Liam Kerr hit a two-run homer to left to make it a 3-2 game. It was the second home run of the year for Kerr, who had hit his first in Bushnell's non-conference contest last Tuesday.

UBC added a run in the fifth before Daniel Furman entered in relief for the Beacons, giving up just one hit in three innings of work. Ethan Sachs (2-3) got the start, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits through five innings.

Vicarte Domingo earned the save, throwing the final two innings for the Thunderbirds. The Beacons loaded the bases in the ninth after two hit batters and a walk, but Domingo forced a pop up to end the threat.

Game 2: British Columbia 10, Bushnell 3

Jonny McGill and Trent Lenihan picked up four RBI apiece for UBC in game two. Ryan Beitel (3-4) recorded the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.

Cade Crist tied the game at 1-1 with an infield single in the top of the third but the Thunderbirds took back the lead in the bottom half with a three-run bases-clearing double by McGill.

A triple from Noah Montoya and a sacrifice fly by Peyton Hino cut the Beacons deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fourth.

UBC put up another three-run frame, this time the bottom of fifth, to extend its lead to 7-3. A two-run double from Mike Fitzsimmons and an RBI-single from McGill made up the scoring for the Thunderbirds.

Lenihan made it a 10-3 UBC lead with a three-run homer in the seventh.

Alec Gums (4-2) threw four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. Jahshua Yacapin pitched the next three, allowing three runs on four hits before Jayden Soriano tossed the eighth, giving up one hit.

Up Next: The Beacons and Thunderbirds finish off the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
