Beacons Split with No. 16 Warriors to Stay in Postseason Hunt

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Bushnell University baseball team stays alive in the hunt for a spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason, splitting with No. 16 Lewis-Clark State College on Friday at the Hamlin Sports Complex.

Bushnell (23-23, 11-11 CCC) scored in all but one inning, recording eight extra-base hits in the 12-8 series opening victory before LC State (27-14, 12-10) piled on six home runs in a 16-6 seven-inning run- rule win. The Beacons and Warriors combined for 49 hits, including 13 home runs on the day.

The Beacon win was their first-ever victory against an NAIA Top-25 ranked team.

LC's Sam Olsson led the day with three homers and eight RBI.

Head Coach Tommy Richards said, "Game one was a fun baseball game with each pitch carrying a lot of weight. Game two was a butt whooping. It will be a great challenge and opportunity for our club tomorrow."

Game 1: Bushnell 12, No. 16 LC State 8

Cade Crist finished 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs and five RBI as the Beacons tallied 15 hits on the way to their first ever win over the Warriors. Jordan Wilson hit 3-for-5 with three RBI, including a two-run homer.

LC State led 5-2 before Bushnell put up a four-run bottom of the third, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI-single from Wilson and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Reed before taking the lead on a two-run double from Crist.

Wilson extended the Beacon advantage to 8-5 with his two-run shot in the fourth and Crist made it a 10-5 lead with a two-run homer of his own in the fifth.

Olsson homered in the seventh for the Warriors to cut the lead to 11-8 but the Beacons held on, adding a run on a Noah Montoya ground-rule double in the eighth. Daniel Furman threw the final 2.1 innings for the Beacons, giving up the homer to Olsson in the seventh before striking him out  in the final at-bat of the game.

Ethan Sachs (3-4) got the win on the mound, going 6.2 innings for the Beacons. Sachs allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. Furman allowed a run on two hits.

Olsson and Jakob Marquez finished with three hits apiece to lead the Warriors in the opener.

Game 2: No. 16 LC State 16, Bushnell 6 (7 innings)

LC State forced a split, coming away with a run-rule victory despite being out-hit, 12-11.

The second game was a rough start on the mound for both sides as the contest was tied at 5-5 after just one inning. The Warriors hit three homers in the frame, but the Beacons answered with a two-run double from Cayden Delozier and a three-run homer by Montoya to tie it up.

Jake Green (2-0) entered in the bottom of the first for LC with no outs and did not give up a run, leaving three Beacons stranded.

The Warriors went on to record six runs in the third and five in the fifth to cruise to a 16-6 victory. The Beacons grabbed a run in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to avoid to the run rule.

Drake George got the save, tossing the final four innings for the Warriors, allowing just one run on three hits. Carter Booth and Olsson hit two home runs each. Booth finished with four RBI, while Olsson tallied five.

Up Next: Bushnell and LC State continue the battle for the last spot in the conference tournament with another doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Beacons need to sweep the Warriors tomorrow to secure a playoff berth.

Six seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony as Bushnell celebrates Senior Day: Caleb Schorr, Caleb Watson, David Schwartz, Jack Horn, Jeff Fripp and Trenton Hough.
