Bushnell Sweeps Eastern in Four-Game Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Bushnell University baseball team opened the Cascade Collegiate Conference season with a four-game sweep over Eastern Oregon University, winning 10-1 and 3-0 on Saturday at the Hamlin Sports Complex.

Head Coach Tommy Richards said, "It was a good weekend for the Beacons. I thought our guys did a good job of focusing and being ready to play all weekend long. The arms came in and did their jobs and our hitters put a lot of stress pitches on their staff and scored in multiple innings."

Bushnell (16-9, 4-0 CCC) held Eastern Oregon (1-23, 0-8) to three runs in the four-game series.

Peyton Hino, who hit 3-for-6 with three runs scored on the day, said, "Eastern had played solid defense all weekend with tracking down fly balls, so my approach was to just stay on a line and find a way on base. I loved the energy we had all weekend even with the delay. Really good job from our pitchers as well who all went out and competed."

Game 1: Bushnell 10, Eastern Oregon 1

Bushnell entered the hour and 20-minute weather delay with a one-run advantage in the top of the fourth. The Beacons came out of the delay by scoring in all but one frame, putting up eight runs to take the contest, 10-1.

A five-run bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Eight Beacons recorded at least one RBI and five recorded a multi-hit game.

Ethan Paulson got the start, throwing the four innings prior to the delay, allowing one run on two hits. Alec Gums (3-1) pitched three scoreless innings followed by Jayden Soriano and Jack Horn, who pitched a frame each.

The Mountaineers were led by Joey Freitas, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Game 2: Bushnell 3, Eastern Oregon 0

The Beacons held the Mounties to just two hits in the series finale. Adam Sabatino (2-1) got the start, throwing five innings. Trevor Hammond tossed the next two, before Trenton Hough pitched the eighth. Colby Knutzen finished off the ninth to record his second save of the season.

The Bushnell pitching staff did not give up a hit through the final four innings.

The Beacon scoring came off the bats of Jeff Fripp, Dylan Carson and Ethan Stacy. Fripp hit an RBI-single in the first and Carson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Stacy scored the final run with a solo homer to left in the sixth, his first of the season.

Jaydon Yancey pitched seven innings for Eastern Oregon, allowing three runs on seven hits.

Coming Up: Bushnell continues conference play at Corban on April 1-2.
