Bushnell Splits with Jessup in Season-Opening Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCKLIN, Calif.  – A trio of pitchers and a pair of home runs highlighted a 4-3 season-opening win before a 10-3 loss in the second game of non-conference action as the Bushnell baseball team split with Jessup University on Friday afternoon.

Last season, Bushnell (1-1) was swept by Jessup (3-5) in a four-game series. This season, the Beacons start off the year with a victory.

Head Coach Tommy Richards said, "Sachs set a good tone and pounded his fastball and secondary stuff for strikes. He was probably the bright spot. Keamo and Knutzen came in and did their jobs well. Offensively we were competitive, stayed in control of ourselves and did a good job of staying within."

Game One: Bushnell 4, Jessup 3

Brandon Reed gave the Beacons a 2-0 lead in the second with a homer to left center, bringing in Jeff Fripp who had reached first on a walk. A Reece Carganilla single and a pair of walks loaded the bases, but all three runners were stranded to keep the Beacon advantage at two.

The Warriors tied it up with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom of the third.

Reed opened the top of the fourth with a double and crossed home on a two-out single up the middle by Daniel Furman to put the Beacons back on top, 3-2.

Jessup tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer.

Jordan Wilson made a run-saving throw in the seventh, catching a runner trying to score from second on a single to right. The energy stayed high for the Beacons as a solo home run from Carganilla in the eighth turned out to be the decider. The sophomore sent a shot to left for the second home run of his career.

Ethan Sachs, Kai Keamo and Colby Knutzen (1-0) pitched in the opener for the Beacons. Keamo relieved Sachs in the fifth and Knutzen entered with two outs in the seventh. Sachs allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four. Keamo allowed one run on one hit through 2.2 innings, while Knutzen did not allow a run, giving up three hits in the final 2.1 innings.

Game Two: Jessup 10, Bushnell 3 (7 innings)

Jessup used a five-run bottom of the third to take an 8-1 lead and added two more in the fourth to force a split on the day. Both sides recorded nine hits in game two, but the Warriors had five hits go for extra bases to come away with the seven-run victory.

"Game two got away from us early," said Richards. "We gave away too many inches too easily on both sides of the ball. Good teams find a way to minimize big innings and stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, we were not able to answer the bell. It's a new day tomorrow with lessons learned."

Jordan Wilson led Bushnell at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Cade Crist went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in the third, his first home run as a Beacon. Crist also scored a run on Wilson's single in the fifth.

Alec Gums (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Bushnell, giving up the first three runs on five hits. Chase Senecal and Caleb Watson made relief appearances before Trevor Hammond entered in the fourth. Hammond held the Warriors scoreless in the final 2.2 innings, and did not allow a hit.

Trevor Arnston (1-1) earned the pitching win for Jessup, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Bushnell and Jessup conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
