Beacons Fall to No. 7 Mounties in Home Opener

PHOTO GALLERY | EUGENE, Ore.  – Less than 24 hours after sweeping No. 5 Corban, the seventh-ranked Eastern Oregon volleyball team planted themselves in the Cascade Conference drivers' seat, knocking off Bushnell University in four sets, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 25-15.

The Beacons (6-4, 1-1 CCC) who are currently receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll, put up a fight, but were unable to contend with 13 service aces and 12 blocks from the Mounties. After a pair of well contested sets, EOU pulled away over the last two, where they had most of their blocks.

Head Coach Jason Corwin said, "We ran into a top-ten team tonight and they played like a top-ten team. We did a great job the first two sets, executing out game plan and playing with confidence. Eastern did a really good job keeping and maintaining pressure on us in the last two sets. We went away from our game plan and made it easier for them to score points."

EOU (9-1, 2-0) hit .185 in the game with setters Hannah Ledgerwood and Alexis McMurtrey combining for 37 assists. Ledgerwood added four aces, as did Libero Hailey Arritola, who also led all players with 20 digs. Sade Williams posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs adding three blocks, but it was a monster night on the block by Cambree Scott that did the most damage as the senior collected ten blocks and seven kills, hitting .273.

Bushnell got most of their offensive production from the outside duo of Shay Coons and Jessica Northcutt. Coons led all players with 14 kills while Northcutt posted 12 kills and 12 digs, adding a pair of service aces.

Makenna Northern collected 33 assists and Callie Wilkins chipped in 14 digs. Halle Neumann, who usually patrols the right side for the Beacons, got a spot start in the middle and led the Beacons with five blocks.

The Beacons will remain at home on Wednesday night, when they will play host to No. 5 Corban at 7:00 pm.
