Jones, Neumann Lead Beacons to Bounce Back Win

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.  – Senior Halle Neumann posted a career-high in kills and Senior Payton Jones tied two nine-year-old blocking records to lead the Beacons to a five-set victory over Oregon Tech on Friday night, 22-25, 18-25, 27-25, 26-24, 15-8.

After dropping a five-set heartbreaker to No. 17 Southern Oregon on Friday, and after losing the first two sets on Saturday, the Beacons survived a match-point in the third set, claimed the fourth set in a close one, and then rolled to victory with nine kills in the fifth.

The Beacons (9-6, 4-3 CCC) were out hit .199 to .153 on the night, but posted a season-high 16 blocks, along with ten service aces, which being aced just twice.

Head Coach Jason Corwin said, "What a team performance tonight! The never-die attitude of this group was on full display tonight. This was our best passing night of the season, led by Bella Parque. We picked up the pace in the third and started finding ways to score. Our block and defense started taking away their dynamic plays and we were able to overcome."

Parque said, "Coming into the game after a tough loss, we knew we needed to win. Once we hit the third set, we were dominating and our energy was unstoppable. It was an awesome night of competition."

For Oregon Tech (6-7, 3-4), Kaylin Talonen led all players with 20 kills, followed by 15 from Molly Gracy. Katie Hicks had a strong night in the middle with nine kills and eight blocks, hitting .500. Paige Tevelde scored a double-double with 53 assists and 12 digs while Aubrey Kievit led all players with 24 digs.

For the Beacons, Neumann collected 19 kills and just three errors and was a big part of the defense with five blocks. She has dominated on the road against the Owls in her career, and had 15 kills last season. "Halle has had how many career nights in that gym," added Corwin. "What a performance from her, and we needed every single one of those kills."

Jones (pictured) proved unstoppable at the net, collecting ten total blocks with nine assists, both equaling school records that had been on the books since 2007.

Neumann and Jones were not alone however, as Matty Ladd added six blocks and Shay Coons had three. Jessica Northcutt, who had her own career-night on Friday, added another 13 kills and 13 digs, producing five blocks as well.

Senior Makenna Northern continued to add to her legacy on Saturday as well with 47 assists and ten digs for the 39th double-double of her career. That ties the Bushnell all-time record, a mark which she shares with another setter, Cori Wallace (2010-2013).

"We got back in the groove tonight," said Northern. "The first two sets were a little scary but this team is filled with a bunch of fighters and it showed. We have a tough weekend ahead of us and I can't wait to play against more tough competition."

The Beacons will be back in action on Friday night, returning home to take on Northwest University (8-7, 4-3) at 7:00 pm. On Saturday, they will face the rising Evergreen State (6-4, 5-1) also at 7:00 pm.
