PHOTO GALLERY | EUGENE, Ore. – Playing their third straight five-set match, the Bushnell volleyball team rallied from an 8-5 deficit in the final set to claim victory over Northwest University, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 17-15.
The Beacons (10-6, 5-3 CCC) hit .203 in the match but 39 kills and just 12 attack errors over the final three sets. They out-blocked the Eagles (8-8, 4-4), 13-7 and had nine services aces on the night.
It was a heart-pounding match from start to finish as the Beacons found themselves trailing at some point in all five sets. The final set proved to be one for the ages but the visitors attempted to put it away early as they were trying to secure the upset over a Bushnell team currently receiving votes in the NAIA National Coaches Poll.
The Eagles were ahead 8-5 after a Karste Wright kill. Beacon points from
Halle Neumann and
Shay Coons, however, fueled a 5-1 Bushnell run to take a brief 10-9 lead. The teams went on to tie the match on each of the next five points before Neumann and
Payton Jones produced back-to-back kills to end the night.
"Northwest is always a tough match and we knew we needed to come out on top," said Jones. "Coach always tells us there is no off-weekend in this conference and we have to be prepared to play our hardest every time we take the floor and we continue to do so. This team continues to amaze me with the amount of resiliency that we possess."
Jones, the reigning CCC Defensive Player of the Week, finished another huge match with six blocks and 12 kills, hitting .611. She was joined on defense by a seven-block night from
Matty Ladd and on defense by
Jessica Northcutt who led the Beacons with 20 kills and three service aces.
Senior
Makenna Northern cemented another career record for the Beacons as she completed her third straight double-double (47 assists, 14 digs) and 40th of her career.
Neumann added 12 kills and five blocks of her own while
Callie Wilkins notched a team-high 16 digs with three service aces.
For the Eagles, Wright and Abi Broussard were the big stories. Wright finished with 21 kills to lead all players while Broussard added 18 kills, hitting .500. Anna Saelens led the team with 46 assists while Kelsey Moore posted a match-high 19 digs.
The Beacons will be back in action on Saturday night when they face the Evergreen State (6-5, 5-2) at 7:00 pm. The Eagles head north to Salem to take on Corban (14-2, 7-1).
