EUGENE, Ore.– After a pair of distance runners qualified for conference on Friday night, five more Beacons hit CCC standards on Saturday at the Lane Community College Invitational.
Â
Nathan Wirth (pictured, right) was the lone male competitor to add his name to the guest list for the Cascade Conference Championships as the senior cleared a 4.01m bar in the pole vault.
Â
He was joined on the women's side by senior
Carina Haas who had already qualified for conference but did herself one better as she toppled her own school record, clearing 3.21 meters. The pole vault also featured
Skye Urban who just missed out on the CCC mark with a clearance of 2.46m.
Â
Director of Track & Field
Tom Boldon said, "Our vaulters have not had much specific vault practice yet this season, and Carina isn't even close to 100% healthy right now. All three looked better this week, and seem to have regained some of their confidence. It was a sign of still better things to come."
Â
The women had four new conference qualifiers on Saturday, across all disciplines.
Adrienne Mai posted a personal record in the 400m, coming in at 1:00.38 to qualify for her third event. Boldon said, "Adrienne has been our most consistent competitor this season."
Â
In the 400m Hurdles,
Sierra Janikowski (pictured, left) qualified with a time of 1:12.02.
Faith Palmer scored a 10.17m triple jump for a conference mark while
Jenae Usselman bested the Discus standard at 33.55m.
Â
There were also a handful of near misses early in the season including
Trinity Hazelitt in the long jump. The freshman added over ten inches to her collegiate best with a final leap of 4.81m, just 9 centimeters away from the CCC standard. "Trinity had a series of strong jumps," said Boldon, "and is just now coming into her own in this event."
Â
Jaron Carter led the Beacon men in the 400m event and posted a time of 51.16, missing the conference time by less than a half second.
Â
The Distance Carnival portion of the Lane Community College Invitational took place on Friday night with a number of Bushnell student-athletes making an impact.
Â
Leading the way were a pair of juniors, competing and earning Cascade Collegiate Conference qualifications in the 10,000m run. For the women,
Rebecca Kuskie took second place and earned her second CCC ticket with a time of 39:13.15. She was just a minute shy of the NAIA "B" standard.
