SALEM, Ore. – The young 2022 track season rolled along on Saturday with the Beacons finding numerous season and career bests, along with eight new CCC qualifications from six different athletes at the Willamette Invitational.
Â
Director of Track & Field
Tom Boldon said, "We only qualified 18 athletes for this meet, but still had six of them qualify for conference. Several people had really good days. I think
Adrienne Mai may have had the best day of anyone with two conference qualifiers, a lifetime best in the 100m and a strong anchor leg of 59.77 in the relay."
Â
Leading the way was junior
Jenae Usselman, clearing the CCC standard in the javelin with a mark of 38.18 meters (125'3"). In her first throw of the season she missed the NAIA "B" standard by just 32 inches.
Â
For the men, it was
Ashton Williams leading the way with not one but two CCC qualifications. The freshman cleared the conference standard in both the 100m (11.13) and the 200m (22.90) and is Bushnell's leader in both events so far this season.
Â
Sprinters also punched their tickets to the women's CCC championship. Freshman
Maddii Desemone qualified in the 100m (12.86) while
Adrienne Mai set a new PR in the 200m (26.60) and also qualified in the 100m (12.92).
Â
The women also saw a pair of vertical jumpers clear conference marks.
Mikayla Rodriguez posted a 1.43m high jump while
Carina Haas cleared the pole vault standard with a leap of 2.95m.
Â
Other highlights of the event included a 1500m PR for junior
Rebecca Kuskie (4:58.09), a javelin personal best for
Taylor Huffman (49.37m) and strong improvements for both 4x400m relay teams.
Â
The women's 4x4 team of Pappas,
Aneykah McCall,
Sarah Phillips, and Mai took ten seconds off of their season best time, running a 4:11.83. Â The men's team of
Joel Kambou,
Jaron Carter,
Jacob Sanders, and Williams improved by nearly five seconds (3:36.87).
Â
"All in all today was a good meet," said Boldon. "I am pleased with the progress our kids are making and expect some really impressive marks in the coming weeks. We look forward to two meets next weekend."
Â
The Beacons will see split competition coming up with selected athletes participating at the Hayward Premiere on Friday while the bulk of the team heads to Linfield on Saturday for the Jenn Boyman Memorial.
