Raiders Edge Beacons in Closing Seconds

EUGENE, Ore. – K'wan Carter drove in the go-ahead layup with 2.7 seconds on the clock to give visiting Southern Oregon a 70-68 victory over the Bushnell men's basketball team in Saturday's Cascade Collegiate Conference contest.

With the win, Southern Oregon (14-11, 11-6 CCC) maintains its third-place spot in the CCC standings. Bushnell (8-17, 6-12) drops to tenth with just four games to go in conference play. Multnomah (8-10) and Eastern Oregon (8-10) sit in a tie for the eighth-place spot followed by Northwest (7-11) in ninth.

Bushnell was in the driver's seat in the first half after using a 19-7 run to take a 21-12 lead. The Beacons led by as many as 12 in the period and took a 39-31 advantage into the break.

The Raiders inched their way back throughout the second half, tying the game at 59-59 with five and a half minutes to go. SOU held a slim lead before back-to-back layups from Stevie Schlabach and Keishon Dawkins tied the game at 68-68 with 12 seconds remaining. The Beacons were unable to get off a final shot after K'wan's go-ahead basket in the closing seconds.

Schlabach led the Beacons with 18 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Kaden Sand added 12 points, while Drayton Caoile finished with 10 points, five assists and four steals. Dawkins led the team in rebounding, grabbing eight while also recording 10 points.

Bushnell shot 48% from the field, 43% from three-point range and 71% from the free throw line but gave up 18 points off turnovers. The Raiders finished with more turnovers than the Beacons, 18-17, but gave up just eight points in that category.

SOU shot 46% from the floor, 18% from three and 84% at the free throw line. The Raiders were led by 19 points from Atmar Mundu. Josh Meyer recorded a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Tez Allen nearly did the same, posting 12 points and nine rebounds. Carter added 15 points to put four Raiders in double figures.

It has been a season of "unrealized expectations", said Head Coach Eddie Alexander. With a team full of potential, the Beacons have fallen short on a few occasions. Despite the frustration, the Beacons are still in contention to make the conference tournament.

Bushnell hosts Lewis-Clark State College (Feb. 11) and Walla Walla University (Feb. 12) next week.
