SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – More history was made on Sunday as the upstart Bushnell University baseball, playing their first season in over 50 years, pulled off their first win of the season with a 6-0 shutout of Corban at Hamlin Sports Complex.
Â
The Beacons (1-11) out-hit the Warriors (6-4-1) 11-4, taking care of business at the plate, on the mound and defensively. There were plenty of headline makers in the contest, led by the pitching tandem of
Jahshua Yacapin and
Kai Keamo. With a full compliment of family and friends from the Islands in attendance, the duo that grew up just 12 miles apart on O'ahu combined for the four-hitter, striking out 11 batters.
Â
Offensively,
Noah Montoya,
Jacob Stoner,
Brendan Frazier, and
Dylan Martin each had two hits while six different players came across the dish to score.
Â
Head Coach
Tommy Richards said, "That was a complete team win. Jahshua and Keamo pitched really well, we played solid defense, and we were able to produce offensively. All three phases contributed."
Â
Martin, the local product out of Marist High School, was a part of things at the beginning and the end. He started off with an RBI single in the second inning to score the first run, and fielded the final out of the game to seal the historic win.
Â
Small-ball was the bread and butter for the Beacons on Sunday. In the third inning they were able to manufacture a pair of runs, with
Peyton Hino scoring on a double-steal and
Noah Montoya later coming home on a sacrifice bunt by
Brandon Reed.
Â
Hino had a run-scoring sacrifice bunt of his own in the fourth to score Martin, and
Reece Carganilla scored on an error as Bushnell took a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning.
Â
Yacapin threw 5.1 innings, striking out six before giving way to Keamo in the sixth. The reliever got out of a significant jam in the eighth inning to help preserve what would become the clean sheet. The Warriors loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch with just one out. Keamo struck out the next batter, and the clean-up hitter followed with a fielders choice groundout.
Â
Keamo picked up his first collegiate save, throwing the final 3.2 innings and striking out five batters.
Â
Bushnell will look to take some momentum into their next season as they welcome Oregon Tech back to the Park next weekend for four games. "We still have a long way to go to reach out stride but today was a big step in the right direction," said Richards. "I am really happy for the guys and really happy for the people who have invested so much into the program. It took us a while to get the first one, and now we just need to keep getting better."
