Career Night for Mathis Leads Beacons Past Wolves

Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – Libby Mathis finished with a career-high 28 points and 16 rebounds to lead Bushnell University to a 66-59 victory over visiting Walla Walla University in Saturday evening's Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball contest.

Mathis shot 13-for-18 from the floor and added four blocked shots to her already impressive double-double. The junior helped the Beacons finish with a 51-32 advantage in rebounds, which included a 19-5 margin in offensive boards.

Head Coach Chad Meadors said, "We found a way to win and you can boil it down to two things. Number one, Libby Mathis, on the offensive and the defensive end. She had an unbelievable game with 28 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots. The second thing that led us to the win was we put in a 2-3 zone. It looked so good in practice that we started using it all week long and it helped us win a game tonight."

The Beacons took a 41-33 lead into the break before the Wolves opened the third quarter with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 45-45.

The sides were tied at 53-53 entering the fourth quarter but Mathis scored six straight to make it a 59-53 advantage for Bushnell. The Beacons outscored the Wolves 13-6 in the period, led by nine points and seven rebounds from Mathis in that quarter alone, to hold on to the victory.

"My teammates found me in the right spots," said Mathis. "They knew I had a size advantage and they got me the ball. At the end of last year and going into this year, I've really learned to take my time, be decisive and be strong."

Aspen Slifka added 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting for the Beacons. Aly Mirabile recorded six points and five assists.

The Wolves (1-6, 0-4 CCC) were led by Jaliyah Casem, who finished with 19 points and six assists. Chariah Daniels recorded a double-double, finishing just short of the 20-rebound mark with 19. Clara Campos added 17 points for WWU.

With the win, Bushnell (7-2, 4-0 CCC) remains undefeated in conference play heading into a matchup against No. 10 Lewis-Clark State College on Sunday. The Beacons and Warriors tip off at 3:00 p.m. in the Morse Center.
