Beacons Tame River Otters for First Victory

SALEM, Ore. – The Bushnell women's basketball team got their first win of the 2026-2027 season under their belts on Friday, winning their opening game of the Corban Classic over Lewis & Clark College, 66-46.

The Beacons (1-2) shot just under 40% in the contest and never looked back after establishing a first-quarter lead, winning on the strength of a defense that forced 21 turnovers and held L&C to just 26% shooting.

Tied 7-7 in the early goings, senior Jersey McGehee scored five straight to spark a 9-2 run as Bushnell closed out the first quarter leading 16-9. An 18-1 run in the second quarter turned the seven-point lead into a 19-point margin and Bushnell was off to the races, leading by as many as 28 in the final minute of the third quarter as they led 58-32 heading into the fourth.

The Beacons were led by Ellis Mastel, scoring a game-high 15 points and setting the offensive tone early in the contest. Mastel said, "It felt nice to get a win tonight. It was good to be back in Oregon in a familiar gym and getting into a groove. I think we have learned a lot from our first two games and it was satisfying to see the hard work pay off. This is a fun group to play with and we have scorers everywhere on the floor. We work hard to make good plays for each other and we all trust each other to make those plays."

Jersey McGehee (pictured) hit four three-pointers on her way to a 14-point night. Sabrina Flowers added 12 points and Dayvis Key powered the defense as she earned 12 rebounds and three blocks to go with eight points. Peyton Vorderstrasse made the most of her 13 minutes of action off the bench, earning a game-high four assists.

Lewis & Clark (0-1) was led by Lilly Jordan, scoring 12 points while Lauryn Frederickson scored a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Head Coach Chad Meadors said, "I am pleased with our defensive effort 100% tonight. I would have liked to finish a little bit better in that fourth quarter, but overall you don't get too angry about a 20-point win."

UP NEXT: The Beacons will close the Corban Classic on Saturday at 4:00 pm, facing off against Simpson University (1-2).
