Raiders Shock Beacons with Comeback Win

EUGENE, Ore.  – Things looked well in hand as the Beacons rolled to wins in the first two sets, but Southern Oregon University stormed back to a 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-11 victory over Bushnell on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

For Southern Oregon (17-8, 11-7 CCC) is was the play of setter Hannah Randall that led the way as she collected 11 dump kills on 14 attempts with Bushnell unable to find an answer.

Blocking also played a major factor in the match for both teams as they combined for 35 blocks with Bushnell holding a slight 18-17 edge. Sophomore Matty Ladd had an impressive silver-lining performance in the loss, smashing a Bushnell single-match record for both block assists (10) and total blocks (13). The previous record of ten total blocks in a match was originally set in 2007 and was matched by Payton Jones earlier this year.

The Beacons (16-10, 11-7) had eight service aces on the night, led by three apiece from Shay Coons and Makenna Northern. Northern led all players with 44 assists and Callie Wilkins finished with a match-high 26 digs. Jessica Northcutt had 17 kills in the loss while Coons and Halle Neumann added 12 kills each.

Southern Oregon was led by 14 kills and 13 blocks from Sadie Byrd. Kayla Neidigh led the team with 23 digs while Randall finished with 42 assists.

With the loss, the Beacons drop into a tie with SOU for fourth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, one game behind Evergreen for third-place with four matches to play. Bushnell will be in Olympia, Washington on Friday night to take on the Geoducks at 7:00 pm.
