EUGENE, Ore. – Senior
Claire Salness became Bushnell's all-time leader for attack attempts on Friday night as the Beacon volleyball team cruised to a 25-14, 25-18, 25-14 victory over Multnomah University at the Morse Center.
Â
Salness, a two-sport athlete for Bushnell who also played 15 minutes for the Beacon basketball team on Friday, took the new record midway through the third set, and finished her night with 25 attempts and 3,013 career swings. She passes the previous record of 3007, held by Janel Fetters since 2013.
Â
"What an honor and a great way to cap off my senior year playing for this university," said Salness. "While this year has obviously had it's challenges, I am so blessed to have the support and the opportunity to compete and contribute on two teams. It was a great day of wins for Bushnell and I am excited to continue the good work tomorrow."
Â
For the Beacons, it was a well-rounded victory as the team hit .293 and held the Lions to a negative hitting percentage. Bushnell had seven blocks on the night and were never blocked themselves and they held a 6-4 advantage in aces, a 49-43 edge in digs and a 35-26 margin in kills.
Â
"The team did a good job of playing focused," said head coach
Jason Corwin, "Their libero gave us some trouble that we had to overcome. We maintained some consistent attack pressure and hit our marks defensively. We have some things that we would like to do better tomorrow and we are looking forward to the opportunity to compete against the Lions again."
Â
Makenna Northern posted her usual consistent night with a match-high 30 assists along with nine digs.
Natalie Martin and
Halle Neumann had seven kills apiece and combined to record no errors on 24 attempts. Salness finished with six kills, as did
Jessica Northcutt, while
Payton Jones earned five kills and four blocks.
Callie Wilkins led the Beacons with 15 digs.
Â
Multnomah (0-11, 0-11 CCC) was led by Kamaile Labanon, collecting a match-high nine kills. Rachel Bailey posted 20 assists and Alyssa Mehalovich led all players with 16 digs.
Â
Bushnell (10-5, 6-5) will host the Lions again on Saturday at 6:00 pm. The Beacons remain in a three-way tie for third-place in the CCC as Oregon Tech and Lewis-Clark State both won on Friday to move to 6-5.
