Defense Leads Beacons to Sweep of LC State

EUGENE, Ore.  – Coming back from a late six-point deficit in the third set, Bushnell completed a dramatic sweep of Lewis-Clark State College on Friday night, 25-17, 25-18, 30-28.

The Beacons (19-6, 15-6) hit .253 in the contest and held the Warriors (16-13, 11-10) to just a .088 clip as they out-blocked the home team 9-4. Bushnell held a 40-31 advantage in digs and collected six service aces.

Bushnell didn't have to push through much resistance on their way to a two-set lead on Friday, but ran into a determined Warrior team in set three. LC State used an early 6-1 run to go ahead by six, 14-8. The Beacons rallied to tie the game at 15, but once again the Warriors answered and found themselves ahead 23-17, knocking on the door of a fourth set.

Bushnell went on a 7-1 run of their own, fighting off four set-points for Lewis-Clark State and tied things up at 24-24. Three more set-clinching opportunities were avoided, and the Beacons eventually took the match on back-to-back kills from Halle Neumann and Shay Coons.

Head Coach Jason Corwin said, "This was a really good win against a good team on their home floor. The third set was exciting and once again showed the grit and resilience of this team."

"The third set showed us how strong we are, added senior Jackie Harmon who led the Beacons with three service aces in the match. "We were pushed to stay focused with LC's aggressive offense."

Callie Wilkins led the team with nine digs, but the defensive effort was highlighted by blocking as Coons, Payton Jones, and Sierra Jenkins each had four blocks in the game.

Neumann led the Beacon offense with nine kills, hitting .300 while Coons and Camille Guerrero posted eight kills apiece. Guerrero said, "We came off last weekend's split wanting redemption and we accomplished that. They almost had us in that last set but we came back with fire. I am very proud of our team and what we have accomplished."

Makenna Northern continued to march her way toward the Bushnell career assists record, adding 32 on Friday night. She said, "Today we came out strong and confident. We played well as a team and did it being our goofy selves. It's a great win leading into the end of the regular season tomorrow and and our quarterfinal game at home. We are hoping our fans show up and pack the Morse Center on Tuesday!"

The Beacons will go for a school-record tying 20th victory on Saturday night when they travel to take on Walla Walla University at 8:00 pm. Tuesday's playoff game, which could be against one of four different teams battling for the final playoff spots, will begin at 7:00 pm.
