PORTLAND, Ore - Immersed in a highly competitive game, Northwest Christian was defeated by Warner Pacific University 1-0 on Saturday when the game was called in the 83rd minute due to lightning.
Â
Once a game is delayed due to lightning, rules state the contest must resume within three hours of the original start time or it will be ended early. That is exactly what happened and because the game reached the 70-minute threshold, the score stood.
Â
The teams battled through 77 scoreless minutes before the Knights broke through as Mikayla Martinez scored on a cross from Kendyl Cone. It amounted to the game winning goal as WPU (1-5, 1-2 CCC) picked up their first win of the season.
Â
The Beacons (2-7, 1-3) collected four shots-on-goal in the game and were only outshot 10-8 overall.
Katie Hastings played between the pipes for the full 82 minutes and 51 seconds, recording seven saves.
Â
Northwest Christian will return to action on Friday, October 4, traveling to Washington to take on The Evergreen State College (2-5, 0-3) at 3:00 pm.
