Women's Track & Field CCC Preview

5/9/2019 11:15:00 AM

EUGENE, Ore. – Last season produced one of the most surprising CCC championship appearances for the Beacons as they collected a record eight All-Conference selections (top-three finishers) including five from athletes seeded sixth or lower in their events.

Many of those same athletes are back for the 2019 run, so they won't be taking anyone by surprise, but they are putting the Beacons in position to score plenty of points at the championship.

It all starts with the women's steeplechase on Friday evening where junior Anika Rasubala comes into the event as the favorite. Currently ranked No. 1 in the conference and the NAIA, Rasubala may be NCU's best chance at an individual championship, but the task won't be easy. The field in the 3000m Steeplechase is loaded. Perhaps the most difficult field in an event in any conference in the nation as it will feature the top-four Chasers in the country and six of the top-seven. In fact, of the 16 runners who have hit the NAIA "A" standard this season, nine hail from the CCC.

A few returning All-CCC athletes will also be in action on Friday afternoon. Junior Megan Van Marter took second place in the High jump last season and has steadily been improving this year as she recovered from an off-season ailment. She will be joined in the event by freshman Savannah Proske, the new school-record holder, who is ranked fifth in the event. For Proske, it will be her first of seven events during a jam-packed weekend.

Additionally, Friday will feature the women's long jump where junior Abigail Spencer finished third in 2018. This season she is ranked fifth, one spot higher than she was going in to the championships last season. Proske and Van Marter will also compete in the long jump, as will junior Christy Seaton.

Seaton, seeded fifth in the 100m Hurdles, will look to defend her all-conference finish in that event later that evening and the night will close with Melissa Rios going for her first All-conference award in the 10000m where she is currently seeded third.

After taking third-place in the Discus last season, senior Myah Harter will return for that event on Saturday with the No. 7 seed. Her best chance at a repeat all-conference nod, however, will be on Friday in the Shot Put where she is currently ranked fourth.

Saturday may yield fewer all-conference awards for the Beacons, but a number of athletes are projected to score team points with top-eight finishes. Halona Jackson will compete in the 100m and 200m sprints while both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams are projected to score as well.

Notable among the other Saturday competitors are senior Bri Jury in the 400m Hurdles and Proske in the Triple Jump.
