Late Burst Gives Saints the Victory

EUGENE, Ore. – Scoring three goals in a seven-minute span the visiting Carroll College Saints women's soccer team pulled out a 4-1 victory over Northwest Christian University on Saturday evening in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

McKenna Payne got the scoring going for the Saints just ten minutes into the game, hitting a free-kick from 22-yards out over the keeper and into the left corner of the net. It was the only goal scored over the first 45 minutes.

NCU held an 8-7 lead in shot attempts in the first half, forcing Carroll keeper Devan Murfitt into four early saves, and rolled some of that momentum into the second frame, scoring just six minutes in. Lauren Kogutkiewicz took the ball down the right side, dribbling all the way to the goal line before firing a cross to Sierra Coloma in front of the goal. Coloma put her kick on frame to give NCU the equalizer.

Ten minutes later, senior Talya Vaira put the Saints on her back as she had a piece in all three parts of Carroll's scoring burst. Vaira put her own shot into the back of the net from 25-yards out, floating it into the top left corner for the game-winner in the 61st minute. Just 93 seconds later, her corner kick found Payton Netz who headed home the first of two identical insurance goals. The second corner-kick-header came just six minutes later for the 4-1 final score.

The Saints (3-5-1, 2-0-1 CCC) owned a final advantage of 17-14 in the shot count and 6-3 on corner kicks. Murfitt finished the night with seven saves in the victory.

NCU (2-6, 1-3) got two saves apiece from starting keeper Katie Hastings as well as Rachel Rhoads who served between the pipes for the final 22 minutes without giving up a goal.

The Beacons will hit the road for their next six Cascade Conference matches over a four-week stretch. On September 28th they will be in Ashland to take on CCC-leading Southern Oregon University at 1:00 pm.
