NCU McCaus-Lands in the Win Column

OLYMPIA, Wash.  – Sophomore Forward Maggie McCausland scored the game-winner and assisted on the insurance goal as the Beacon women's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday, 2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action at The Evergreen State College.

NCU (1-3, 1-1 CCC) outshot the Geoducks (0-5-1, 0-2) 16-12 and broke through with a strike in the 54th minute when McCausland took a through-ball from Libby Gregory and scored across the face of the goal.

It was the only goal the Beacons needed, but they scored again anyway, adding a late goal in the 83rd minute. McCausland took a pass and got around her defender deep in the box. She slotted the ball back to Sami Wilson and from ten yards out the junior found the back of the nylon.

NCU withstood five shots-on-goal from the Geoducks as sophomore Katie Hastings recorded her first clean sheet of the season with five saves. Head Coach Jessica Cardwell credited the play in the midfield, specifically senior Brighton Hebisen. "Brighton had an incredible game," said Cardwell. "She really controlled everything and was a strong physical presence in the middle third."

That physical presence was needed in a contest that saw a total of 33 fouls and five cautions. "As always with Evergreen it was a physical contest," said Cardwell. "We made it out without any big injuries and with the win. The girls played well on a slow field and with tired legs."

The Beacons will continue their road warrior trek through the early part of the CCC slate next weekend when they head to Montana. On Friday the Beacons will face Providence (formerly University of Great Falls) and on Saturday they take on Carroll College.
