ASHLAND, Ore. –  In the ultimate example of peaking at the right time, seven NCU records were broken over the weekend as Northwest Christian University men's track & field team took sixth place at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships.
Â
The finish matched their highest in school history from last season but in impressive fashion the Beacons nearly doubled their point total from 2016, scoring 72.
Â
Junior
Garrett Kraal (pictured)Â had the most impressive weekend without setting a school record, claiming not one but two All-Conference honors. On Friday it was a third-place finish in the 1500m and on Saturday he did himself one better, claiming the 5000m championship with a 2.5 second victory. Kraal hit the NAIA "B" standard for the second year in a row and won just the second individual title in school history.
Â
In numerous cases, school records lent themselves to All-Cascade Conference finishes for NCU competitors.
Â
In the Javelin, junior
Christian Hackney crossed the 60 meter barrier for the first time in collegiate competition, hitting a 60.89 to claim second place. He also moved up to No. 3 on the NAIA Performance List.
Â
In the 800m, sophomore
Luke Sparks took third place, breaking his own record with a time of 1:55.25.
Â
Sophomore
Micah Jury toppled his own records in both the 110m and 400m hurdles and took third in the 400m event for an All-Conference nod.
Â
Also earning All-CCC honors for a third-place finish was the 4x100m Relay team of
Matt Jones,
Antonio Campos-Perez,
Harley Gilpin and Joshua Chesnut. It was the first NCU relay team of either gender to ever claim All-Conference and it was the first All-CCC award for all four men.
Â
Other school records to fall were
Michael Andrews in the Pole Vault (4.30m),
Matt Jones in the 100m (10.90) and the 4x400m Relay team of Campos, Spark, Jones, and Jury which hit a 3:22.04 to take more than three seconds off the previous standard.
