Hackman Attacks Eagles for Top-25 Win

EUGENE, Ore.  – The No. 7 Northwest Christian University men's basketball team grabbed their first top-25 victory of the season on Friday night and did it on the back of its seniors, topping No. 13 Northwest, 95-83. Jack Hackman (pictured) hit 11 three-pointers including six in the second-half as NCU erased a 14-point half-time deficit.

NCU (11-3, 5-2 CCC) shot 55.4% from the field and out-rebounded the Eagles 48-30. Northwest (13-3, 5-3) had just seven turnovers, but gave up 60 second-half points as the Beacons shot 17-for-24 over the final 20 minutes.

Head Coach Luke Jackson said, "The guys were determined to come out and win tonight. You have to give credit to a guy like Jack who refused to lose and went ballistic from behind the arc. I'm really proud of the effort and the way the guys dug it out."

Hackman finished with a school-record 11 triples, breaking a record set by Javonte Byrd in 2014. Hackman went 6-for-7 in the second half as NCU outscored Northwest 60-34. He also matched NCU's single-game record for points in a CCC game, scoring 35 to tie a record also owned by Byrd.

Seniors Jay Mayernik and Brendyn Taylor also had strong nights for the Beacons. Mayernik was 7-for-8 from the field scoring 18 points along with 12 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. It was his eighth double-double of the season. Taylor scored 23 points as he shot 7-for-10 from the floor and went 9-for-11 at the charity stripe. Sophomore Kenny Blackwell also ended the night in double-figures, scoring ten points with eight rebounds and six assists.

The Eagles also had four players in double-figures with Justice Martion coming off the bench to lead the team with 23. The Northwest reserves out-scored the Beacon bench, 31-6. Dak Shagren was 4-for-8 from downtown, scoring 18 points. Tre Benton scored 14 points and Michael Dupree added 12. Ben Tucakovic scored eight and led the team with ten rebounds and three assists.

NCU returns to the court on Saturday night, playing host to Evergreen. Northwest will head north to Salem, taking on Corban. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. tipoffs.
