Beacons Blast Past Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Northwest Christian University women's soccer team posted their highest scoring output in over two years on Friday afternoon as they toppled Evergreen, 4-1.

NCU seniors scored all four goals in their final weekend of competition. For senior Melyssa Weber it was a Flashback Friday as she nearly repeated a freshman-year performance in Olympia. In 2012 she scored all three NCU goals for her first career hat-trick in a 3-0 NCU victory. This year she got the game-winner and an insurance goal.

The Beacons first goal, however, was the first career score for senior Joceline Howard. In the 22nd minute, Sami Wilson fired a hard attempt which the Evergreen keeper wasn't able to handle. Howard scooped up the rebound an followed up for the go-ahead score.

Just over two minutes later Weber posted what would become the game-winner, making a touch around the keeper before finishing on a left angled shot.

Weber added her 13th career goal in the 41st minute, giving the Beacons a 3-0 halftime lead as she dribbled in from midfield and fired a 12-yard strike.

Evergreen (2-12, 2-8 CCC) avoided the shutout bid early in the second half when Loren Switzer scored but the Beacons put it out of reach in the 70th minute as Candis Hatfield (pictured) scored from ten-yards out after a bad clearance attempt by the ESC defense. It was also Hatfield's first goal as a Beacon.

The Beacons finished the game holding a 16-8 shot advantage including an 11-3 margin in shots-on-goal. The net result was a two-save afternoon for senior keeper Kristin Fulbright.

The win helps NCU improve to 3-12-1 on the season and 2-8 in the conference. With six points the Beacons jump into a tenth-place tie with Evergreen.

Northwest Christian will close out the season on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Kirkland to take on Northwest University.
