EUGENE, Ore. – Senior
Devyn Iglehart (pictured) posted his first career double-double on Tuesday night, scoring 15 points and 10 assists as the Beacons dropped an exhibition game with the University of Oregon, 101-69.
Â
The 32-point loss was a marked improvement over the 2013 exhibition between the schools in which the Ducks rolled to a 99-59 win. The Beacons shot 40% and were better from outside, shooting 9-for-21 for 43% from three-point range.
Â
Head Coach
Luke Jackson said, 'The big stage and the level of talent was obviously a major factor tonight. We let it get away from us early on. Give them a lot of credit because they took us out of some of our stuff. They have a lot of really good basketball players."
Â
After
Michael Loomis hit a three-pointer for NCU to open the scoring, Oregon went on a 30-2 run over the next 12 minutes to establish an early 25-point lead. The Ducks led 49-30 at the intermission.
Â
The teams traded buckets for the entire final 20 minutes as NCU began to find open players and make things happen. The second half included 4-for-9 shooting from three-point range for the Beacons and a 7-for-7 clip at the free-throw line.
Â
"Once we settled down and ran some of our stuff we got good looks," said Jackson. "They are a big time program and we just put 70 points on them and that is a positive for us. If we had executed a little better we really could have played with them and we proved that in the second half."
Â
Oregon shot 60% from the field and out-rebounded the Beacons 45-20. Joseph Young led the way with 27 points and 7 assists, shooting 9-for-13 from the field. Elgin Cook added 20 points and eight rebounds and Dillon Brooks added 16 points in the win.
Â
Former Duck
Austin Kuemper led NCU with 19 points. For the second straight game he came alive in the second half, pouring in 14 points including a pair of three-pointers. Kuemper had scored just three-points for the Beacons in their exhibition game to open the 2013 season.
Â
Iglehart added 15 points and ten assists along with four rebounds and a steal while Loomis finished with 11 points, shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Â
The big stage wasn't intimidating for the two freshman on NCU's roster.
Kyle Ferreira played 14 minutes in the second half, scoring eight points including a pair of three-pointers.
Jordan Alexander was on the court for 22 minutes for the Beacons and scored four.
Â
Alexander, a Eugene native from Sheldon High, was thrilled with the opportunity to play at Matthew Knight Arena and is excited for what the season will hold for the Beacons. He said, "It was so much fun to play here. We used to have season seats and playing here was something I've thought about for a long time. We had spurts of some really good things tonight. We have some stuff to work on which is good. We can figure out what mistakes we made and work on them, but knowing that we can do what we did against this level of talent gives us some confidence going into the rest of the season."
Â
The Beacons will quickly return to action, starting play in the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic on Thursday against tourney host William Jessup University at 7:30 p.m. On Friday they will take on No. 23 Cal Maritime at 3 p.m.
