EUGENE, Ore.. – Coming in undefeated in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Northwest Christian University men's basketball team was looking to do something they hadn't done in 28 years; beat Oregon Tech on their home floor. The losing streak continued, however, as the Owls defended their turf with a 72-53 win, sending the Beacons to their first CCC defeat.
One night after hitting 11 three-pointers, the Beacons were kept off the scoreboard from behind the arc, going 0-for-9 in the game. A staunch Owl defense held NCU to just 39% shooting and their lowest scoring total since November.
After fighting to an 18-18 tie over the first ten minutes of the game, it would prove to simply not by NCU's night. The Owls went on a 17-8 spree to close out the half, taking a 35-26 lead into the intermission. The second half proved to be much of the same as OIT ended the contest with their biggest lead of the night and a 19-point win.
Oregon Tech (11-7, 4-2 CCC) was led off the bench by Duncan Schramm, scoring 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Derek Evans added 13 points and Kyle Waits chipped in ten points along with eight rebounds and five assists, both team highs. The Owls had five different players post multiple three-pointers in the game and as a team went 12-for-24 from outside.
The Beacons (10-5, 4-1) were led by sophomore
Austin Kuemper (pictured), posting a double-double with game-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds. The dominant post presence shot 8-for-16 from the field and 11-for-12 at the free-throw line. Coming off one of the most impressive shooting performances in school history, sophomore
Javonte Byrd added another ten points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field.
The namesake of OIT's Danny Miles Court, head coach Danny Miles collected his 998th career victory. 39 of those wins have come against NCU in a series that dates back to 1977. The Beacons are just 1-26 all-time in Klamath Falls with the lone victory coming by way of a 68-59 win during the 1985-1986 season.
Despite the loss, NCU will return home next weekend alone in first place in the CCC. Southern Oregon, Oregon Tech, Northwest, and The College of Idaho are all right on their heels with a 4-2 conference record. The Beacons will look to hold them all off on Friday night when they play host to Concordia (12-4, 2-3).
