EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's basketball team shot 52% in the first half and held on for a 62-55 win over Oregon Tech on Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference action at the Morse Event Center. NCU moves up to fifth place in the CCC with the win while Oregon Tech Head Coach Danny Miles remains at 999 career victories for at least one more night.
The Beacons improve to 13-9 overall and 7-5 in the CCC, jumping ahead of Warner Pacific College who was defeated on Friday night. The Owls drop to 12-12 on the season including a 5-7 mark in the conference.
The Owls got the first two points of the game but NCU quickly responded with nine straight and led for the remainder of the contest. The Beacons went ahead by as many as 18 points in the first half before claiming a 34-20 lead at the intermission. OIT was held to just 31% shooting before the break, including a 2-for-13 clip from three-point range.
The Beacons continued to hold a double-digit lead throughout the second half and had built an 18-point lead, 54-36 with 5:31 remaining. A three-pointer by Mihajlo Matic on the Owls' next possession sparked the visitors to a late rally, climbing to within six points in the final minute. NCU then sealed the victory with three free-throws in the final 42 seconds to send Oregon Tech home with the loss.
NCU held Oregon Tech to under 60 points at home for the second straight year after knocking off the Owls in the MEC last season, 63-52. The Beacons have now won 2-of-3 from OIT for the first time since the 1985-1986 season.
Beacon Head Coach
Luke Jackson said, "Most importantly tonight, our bench played some huge minutes tonight. They came in and allowed us to give the starters some rest while maintaining the lead. We executed our game plan tonight and gave them a lot of trouble defensively. My hat goes off to the guys for locking them down tonight. We had some long stretches where we couldn't hit shots, but it didn't matter because we continued to make stops. Guys like
Remi White,
Tyler Fox,
Harley Turner (pictured) and
Nick Sullivan had just as much to do with the win as the starters."
Northwest Christian was led by
Coleton Baker, finishing with 20 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field.
Spencer Coleman added 18 points and
Austin Kuemper finished with 13, along with a team-high three assists. Coleman and Kuemper each led NCU with eight rebounds.
Travis Pacos came off the bench to score five points and led the team with three steals.
Oregon Tech was led by Austen Flint, finishing with a team-high 12 points. Derek Evans added 11 points despite an 0-for-5 night beyond the arc. Josh Johnson scored four points and led all players with 11 rebounds and four steals while Brandon Bautista punched in seven points and five assists. OIT's leading scorer, Kyle Waits, came off the bench to score eight points and seven rebounds.
NCU will look to continue to climb the rungs in the CCC, playing host to No. 14 Southern Oregon University on Saturday night. The Beacons defeated then-no. 2 SOU in Ashland last month, 75-71. Danny Miles will look to become just the second men's four-year collegiate coach to earn his 1,000th victory on Saturday when the Owls travel to Salem to take on Corban University (6-15, 2-10). Both games are slated for 7:30 pm starts.
