EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University women's soccer team knocked another team off of their list of unbeatens on Tuesday, defeated Oregon Tech for the first time in school history, 1-0. NCU made an early goal hold up behind the nine-save effort from sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Fulbright (pictured).
The Beacons, who had scored just twice in nine previous meetings with the Owls, wasted no time in getting on the board in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both schools. Just 1:13 into the game, Bailie Reinwald took a through ball from Melyssa Weber on the right side, beat a fallen defender and scored into the left corner of the net. Head Coach Brett Bentley said, "Bailie took a great finish to the far post. It was a terrific goal."
For the next 89 minutes it was a matter of holding on as the Beacons were outshot 21-12 in the game. Oregon Tech held a 9-8 advantage in shots-on-goal, resulting in nine saves for Fulbright, who picked up her fifth career shutout. "Our defense stood up to the test today," said Bentley. "For extended periods we were chasing the game but our backline and our keeper came up in spades. They played lights out and really won the game for us."
Oregon Tech (3-5-1, 0-1 CCC) was led by eight shots from Rebekah Nisbet, including six shots-on-goal. Owl keeper Rebekah Matteri collected seven saves in the loss.
Northwest Christian (3-6, 1-0 CCC) grabs hold of sole possession of first place in the CCC, at least until Thursday when the conference schedule gets into full gear. The Beacons will travel to face Southern Oregon (4-2-2) at 3:00 pm. The Raiders are another opponent against whom NCU will be looking for their first ever victory.
