Beacons Fall to Raiders in CCC Opener

Box Score
ASHLAND, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University women's basketball team had a late rally, but couldn't overcome a ten-point halftime deficit, losing to Southern Oregon University on Friday night, 74-63. It was the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both teams.

Southern Oregon built its biggest lead of the game midway through the second half, going ahead 61-42. The Riaders still led by 19 points a few minutes later but a Jess Anderson three-pointer sparked a 19-6 NCU rally that pulled the Beacons within six at 69-63 with just under three minutes to play.

Free throws ended the run and the Raiders scored the final five points of the game from the line to ice the victory.

Head Coach Liz Turner-Bolton said, “We played out of sorts tonight and never caught any momentum. It is hard to duplicate SOU's length in their zone. We didn't adjust to the different angles and we were not aggressive in space.”

Haley Newell hit four three-pointers and totaled 20 points to lead the Raiders. Josi McDermott scored 12 points and added four steals while Krysten Copeland led all players with nine rebounds.

Lindsey Shearer (pictured) scored a game-high 22 points, added seven rebounds and Anderson scored ten points. The Beacons hit 49% of their shots (25-of-51) but turned the ball over 25 times. The Raiders also out-rebounded NCU, 45-29.

The Beacons dropped to 7-5 on the season and 0-1 in CCC action. SOU, currently receiving votes in the NAIA top-25 poll, improved to 10-1, 1-0. NCU will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to face Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls at 5:30 pm.
