Robles Efforts Not Enough as Beacons Drop Four

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Junior Catcher Brittany Robles had another solid weekend for the Northwest Christian softball team, but it wasn't enough as the Beacons were swept in a pair of double-headers on the road. Southern Oregon took games on Saturday by scores of 7-2 and 10-1 while Oregon Tech swept a Sunday twin bill, 2-1 and 5-4. Robles registered eight hits on the weekend, batting .533.

The Raiders took game one on Saturday 7-2 as NCU starter Brooke Davis was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits. Two crucial Beacon errors, however, allowed five of the SOU runs to come across unearned. Davis struck out six batters in six innings of work and Robles batting 3-for-4 in the losing effort.

Southern Oregon needed just five innings to claim game two 10-1, putting the mercy rule into effect. The Raiders pounded out 13 hits and nine earned runs against starter Kalyssa Koontz and reliever Jenna Royce. Robles hit 2-for-3 in the game and Lissa Hatefi scored the Beacons only run.

Sunday was a much different story for the Beacons, who were involved in a pair of very close games. Northwest Christian out-hit Oregon Tech in the first game, 11-5, but left 11 runners on base in the game as they were only able to come up with a single run in the 2-1 loss. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when a two-run double against starter Davis was all the Owls would need. The Beacons picked up their run in the top of the sixth as Jonni Byrne scored on an RBI-double from Amber Kraaz.

Davis took to the hill again for game two, in what would prove to be the toughest loss yet for the Beacons this season. NCU took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Owls slowly fought back, taking a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. NCU came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Byrne. The game went into extra innings and in the bottom of the eighth, Oregon Tech got a lead-off double and an RBI single to end the game.

The Beacons drop to 6-9 on the season and are now 1-7 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. NCU is back in action on Monday afternoon as they play host to Patten University.
