EUGENE, Ore. – Concordia University took both ends of a double-header on Saturday, sweeping Northwest Christian, 6-3 and 6-0.
A fourth-inning error proved costly for the Beacons in game one. The game was scoreless through three innings and after a lead-off single by Concordia in the top of the fourth, a ground ball that should have turned into a force out at second was bobbled by an infielder. The misstep was a bad omen for what was to come as Concordia scored all six of their runs in the inning. All six were unearned runs for starting pitcher
Brooke Davis (4-7), however, who pitched a solid game, striking out five batters and allowing five hits through seven innings without an earned run.
The bottom of the Beacon lineup responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth. Facing the CCC's top pitcher this season, Danielle Pulfrey (13-3), the Beacons put together a strong two-out rally, getting three consecutive RBI singles from their seventh, eighth, and ninth hitters to make it 6-3. Pulfrey came into today's game with a 0.75 ERA. She did add ten more strikeouts in the victory, moving her CCC-leading season total to 160 in 109.1 innings of work.
Game two belonged to the Cavaliers starting pitcher, Bethany Demptser (5-1). The freshman threw a complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out four batters to get the victory. The Concordia bats scored a run in the top of the first, and added two in the fifth and three in the sixth to seal the win.
Kalyssa Koontz (3-5) went the distance for NCU, allowing six runs (three earned) on ten hits.
Northwest Christian will be back in action on Friday as they travel to face Eastern Oregon University.
