Hatefi Fuels Beacons to Split

EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Shortstop Lissa Hatefi matched a career high with three hits, including a pair of doubles to lead the Northwest Christian University softball team to a 3-1 victory over Eastern Oregon in game one on Saturday. The Beacons combined managed just three hits in the second game, losing to the Mounties, 1-0.

The Beacons wasted no time scoring in game one. Cassie Bishop led off the contest with a double, advancing to third on a bobble in center field. Hatefi was the next batter and her single to right field scored Bishop to put NCU ahead 1-0.

The Mounties tied things up in the fourth inning on a double-steal that brought home Megan Platz. Then, in the bottom of the fifth the Beacons scored what would amount to the winning runs as Hatefi and Megan Mazanec scored on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Brooke Davis and Brittany Robles.

Davis (4-2) picked up the win in the circle for Northwest Christian, allowing just five hits and the one earned run over seven innings of work, while striking out six. Starter Suzie Espinoza (2-4) took the loss for EOU, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out four.

The Beacon bats were quiet in game two, striking out nine-times as Eastern took the pitching duel, 1-0. Kalyssa Koontz (1-3) was the tough-luck loser for NCU, despite allowing just one run in five innings, striking out four.

The only run of the game was scored in the fourth inning. Platz opened the inning for the Mounties with a single and after a double by Megan Monaghan moved her to third, pitcher Kayli Johnston helped out her own cause with a deep sacrifice fly to left field.

The Beacons had their chances in the game, stranding six eight runners on base including six in scoring position. They had the bases loaded in the fourth inning, but weren't able to put a run across.

Johnston (1-2) grabbed the win for Eastern (3-11, 1-1 CCC) and Samantha Pedro scored the save, striking out three batters in two scoreless innings of relief. Pedro also pitched a scoreless inning in game one. Davis took the hill for NCU over the final two innings and allowed just one hit, adding three strikeouts to her team leading 57 this season.

Northwest Christian (6-5, 1-3 CCC) will be back in action next weekend when they travel to face Oregon Tech on Friday and Southern Oregon on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
