EUGENE, Ore. – Northwest Christian University batters struck out 24 times, including eight on called third-strikes as The College of Idaho swept a double header, both games by 3-1 scores. Jody Zillner picked up a victory and a save for the Coyotes, combining for 16 strikeouts on the day.
Zillner (6-4) was the story in game one, striking out 15 batters while throwing a one-hitter, allowing just one earned run. The Yotes got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning as they took advantage of a number of NCU errors.
The Beacons responded in the bottom of the first with their only run.
Cassie Bishop walked to open the inning and a sacrifice moved her to second. With two outs,
Brittany Robles put the teams only hit of the game in play, an RBI single to score Bishop. College of Idaho added solo runs in the fourth and seventh innings.
Brooke Davis (3-2) took the loss for NCU, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four batters over seven innings of work.
Game two went to the Coyotes as well. CI scored a pair of runs in the second inning and that would be all they would need. They added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by Amy Rhoades and combined for seven hits in the game.
The Beacons scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Davis took the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for her sixth home run of the season. Davis is now just one homer shy of the NCU single-season record. Davis went 2-for-3 in the game getting half of the Beacons four hits.
Megan Mazanec and
Corrie Gustafson also recorded hits for NCU.
Kalyssa Koontz (1-2) took the loss for NCU, allowing just one earned run over five innings of work while striking out three batters.
Jenna Royce allowed just one hit in two innings of relief work. Brooke Judy (4-4) got the win for the Coyotes with seven K's in 6.1 innings and Zillner came in to strike out the final two batters of the game to pick up her first save of the season.
The Beacons (5-4, 0-2 CCC) will be back in action tomorrow as they play host to Eastern Oregon University in another CCC double-header. College of Idaho improves to 10-9 on the season, 2-0 in Cascade Conference action.
