Split Keeps Beacons in Sixth

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian men's basketball team faltered on Friday night as they were upset by Corban College, 65-59. The Beacons responded on Saturday with another come-from-behind win, a 77-59 effort over Concordia. The split helped NCU remain alone in sixth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

NCU held a 32-25 advantage at half-time on Friday night, but were unable to respond when the Warriors came up with a hot shooting hand after the intermission. Corban hit for 62% over the final 20 minutes, rallying for the victory. Head Coach Dave Lipp said, “We got up by ten early in that second half, but we just couldn't control their shooting. We weren't as efficient as we needed to be on offense or defense and we just didn't get the job done.”

Jordan Whittenburg led the Beacons in scoring with 19 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the floor and Andrew Miller added ten points. Erik Quick-Warner added five points, five rebounds, and six assists. Quick-Warner also had his school-record free-throw shooting streak come to an end at 35 when, with 25 seconds remaining in the game, he missed the front end of a double-bonus.

Corban (8-13, 4-8) was led in their upset bid by Wade Douglas who shot 8-for-9 from the field to tie the game-high with 19 points. Paul Martin was right behind with 18, along with a game-high eight rebounds.

Saturday gave the Beacons another trademark victory, coming back from a three-point half-time deficit to grab the win. After shooting just under 30% in the first half, NCU rebounded after the intermission with a 58% effort, outscoring Concordia by 21 points to claim the 18-point margin of victory. In a game of momentum, the Beacons used a final barrage with 15 unanswered points during one late stretch to seal the win.

Whittenburg against led NCU with a season-high 22 points, hitting on a season-best 5 three-pointers. Dylan Perry came off the bench to score 18, along with a team-high seven rebounds, shooting 8-for-10 at the free-throw line. Andrew Williams added 13 points, including eleven in the second half as he shot 6-for-8 from the field. Cameron Marshall added ten points and five rebounds and Miller chipped in six points and a game-high six assists.

Concordia (7-14, 2-10 CCC) was led by Steven Vaughan who scored 24 points. Richard Smith came off the bench to score eleven and Gage Aker was held scoreless but pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

The Beacons (12-9, 6-6) will be back in action next week with a pair of crucial home games against Warner Pacific on Friday and Cascade College on Saturday. While NCU sits just two games out of second place, they are also just two games out of 11th in the extreme tight Cascade Conference.
