Simpson Goes Deep to Upset Beacons

EUGENE, Ore. – Northwest Christian was knocked off by Simpson University on Tuesday night as the Red Hawks grabbed just their second victory of the season, 83-72. Simpson went deep, getting scoring from 12 different players as their bench outscored the NCU reserves, 50-15.

Northwest Christian led 34-33 at half-time and were ahead by as many as eight points in the first moments of the second half, but Simpson used a relentless shooting attack, hitting 10-for-21 from three-point range in the game, to comeback for the victory. The Red Hawks claimed the lead on a three-pointer from Sara Fairburn, 46-45 with 14:10 to play and spread the lead to as many as 11 points with 8:20 to play.

Over the next six minute the Beacons climbed back to within one point, 71-70 behind the strength of a 16-6 run, capped by a three-pointer from Callie McVicker. Trailing by three with a minute and a half to play, a few errant possessions gave Simpson a small cushion, putting the game in the hands of the free-throw shooters as the Red Hawks spread the gap to close out the game.

Northwest Christian (4-4) was led by McKenzie Gambee, who secured a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. McVicker, the leading shooter in the Cascade Conference at 71%, went 6-for-8 from the field and scored 13 points, adding four assists and a pair of steals. Emily Gray led the Beacons with 14 points, also added four assists along with three blocked shots. Elise Gray was also in double-figures for NCU, scoring 12 points with a pair of blocks.

Simpson (2-9) was led by a pair of reserves as Robyn Hockenhull hit 3-for-4 from three-point range and scored a game-high 15 points. Fairburn was also 3-for-4 from outside and ended the night with 13 points and nine rebounds. Chalynn Passmore added 11 points, seven rebounds, 5 assists and three steals to the winning effort. With the win Simpson salvages a split in the season series after NCU defeated the Red Hawks in Redding earlier this season, 73-67.

The Beacons will be back in action on December 5th when they travel to face Cascade College in the opener of CCC play. The tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
