Whittenburg Take Beacons to Tourney Title

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior Guard Jordan Whittenburg (pictured) hit two game-winning jumpers in two nights to help guide the Northwest Christian University men's basketball team to a tournament title at the William Jessup Invitational this weekend.

On Friday it was a jumper with six seconds to play and the Beacons stopped the last second effort by host William Jessup for a 75-73 victory. On Saturday Whittenburg hit a 12-footer from the baseline on an in-bound play as time expired, giving the Beacons a 72-70 victory over The Master's College. It was the first loss of the season for The Master's, who had earlier in the season defeated NCAA Division I school Pepperdine University in an exhibition.

The Beacons (3-1) have already established a flair for the dramatic in the young season, having three straight contests decided on last-second buckets. This weekend's pair also came with the added intrigue of large half-time deficits, which meant consecutive come-from-behind wins for NCU.

Northwest Christian trailed William Jessup by 12 points at the intermission on Friday, 42-30. The Beacons had shot just 39% in the first 20 minutes. NCU came roaring back in the second half, shooting 50%. Whittenburg had a big night for the Beacons, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor included a perfect 3-for-3 effort behind the three-point arc for 14 points. Andrew Miller led the Beacons with 16 points. Three others were in double-digits including Andrew Williams and Erik Quick-Warner with 11 apiece and Dylan Perry who came off the bench to score ten points, adding a game-high four assists.

Saturday's upset victory over The Master's come one night after the Mustangs knocked of CCC rival Concordia University from Portland, 109-84. TMC led by seven at half-time, 34-27. But once again the Beacons would not be denied, firing back with a strong offensive half, putting themselves in a position to have Whittenburg knock down the game winner.

Whittenburg finished with just eight points, but his clutch baskets were enough to earn the senior Tournament MVP honors. Cameron Marshall led NCU in scoring with 16 points. Miller and Brent McKee each scored eleven and Perry added ten points for the second straight contest.

The Beacons hit the road once again on Tuesday as they travel to face Walla Walla University. They will remain in Washington to take on Seattle University on Thursday night.
