Last Second Shot Comes Too Late For Beacons

VALLEJO, Calif. – Senior Forward Dylan Perry hit an apparent game-tying layup as time ran out on Saturday night, but the officials ruled that the ball hadn't left his hand before time expired, handing the Northwest Christian University men's basketball team a 48-46 loss to Cal State Maritime.

The Beacon defense which is allowing just over 50 points per game this season, continued to follow suit, limiting the Keelhaulers to just 44% shooting. It was the offense, however, that plagued NCU on this night. The Beacons shot a strong 71% in the first half, building a 31-25 lead at the intermission, but in the second half Northwest Christian hit just 4-of-15 shot attempts as CSUM clawed their way back for the win.

“With six minutes left in the second half we had scored just four points,” said Head Coach Dave Lipp. “We just couldn't shoot and you're not going to win many games that way.”

The Beacons (2-1) were led by Erik Quick-Warner with 14 points. Andrew Miller added eight points before fouling out. Perry led the team with six rebounds, adding six points, and Drew Laird, making his first collegiate start in place of the injured Jordan Whittenburg, scored six points.

The Keelhaulers (1-1) were led by John Stiles who had 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Alex Raj and Andrew Medeiros had ten points apiece in the victorious effort.

Northwest Christian will be back in action on Friday as they head back to Northern California to take part in the William Jessup Invitational. They Beacons face the hosts at 8:00 pm on Friday and will then take on The Master's College on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
