No. 3 Raiders Take Two from Bushnell

ASHLAND, Ore. -  A two week layoff wasn't quite enough for the Beacons to make their way back into the win column on Friday afternoon as they dropped a pair of games to Southern Oregon University.

The Raiders (27-9, 9-5 CCC), ranked No. 3 in the latest NAIA National Coaches Poll, combined to out-hit the Beacons (5-19, 2-9) 23-5 on the day as the earned a pair of five-inning run-rule victories. Known as a "small ball" team, not reliant on power hitting, SOU put the ball in play all afternoon and took advantage of seven Bushnell errors that resulted in six unearned runs.

GAME ONE: Southern Oregon 14, Bushnell 0 (5 Innings)

The Raiders used an 11-run fourth inning to put the opening session on ice as they pounded out 12 hits.

Sara Martin (3-9) took the loss for the Beacons, giving up nine earned runs in 3.2 innings of work while Ayla Davies (13-5) earned the win for SOU, striking out nine batters in four innings.

The Beacons managed four hits in the contest, led by a 2-for-2 day for Riley Peeler.

GAME TWO: Southern Oregon 9, Bushnell 1 (5 Innings)

It was more of the same in the night cap, as SOU out-hit the Beacons 11-1 and forced four Bushnell fielding miscues. Gabby Garza (0-4) took the defeat for the Beacons, giving up six earned in 2.2 innings of work. Martin recovered from her rough outing with a solid 1.1 innings of relief work, giving up just one hit.

Bushnell finally got on the board with their only run on the day in the third inning. Madison Johnson singled and later scored on a fielding error.

UP NEXT: The Beacons will face the Raiders for two more games on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am.
