Beacons Swept to Close Road Trip

STATISTICS ARE UNOFFICIAL

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Bushnell softball team dropped another pair of games to finish out a 1-5 Arizona road trip, losing twice to Ottawa University of Arizona.

GAME ONE: Ottawa 11, Bushnell 10

The error bug hit the Beacons in the opener as their six miscues led to five unearned runs for the Spirit, as OUAZ handed Bushnell their third straight walk-off defeat.

Things were cruising along for the Beacons, who took a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Only to see the Spirit rally for eight runs, using a home run and four straight extra-base hits as they took a 10-7 lead.

Bushnell used the long ball themselves, rallying to tie the game with a two-run homer from Ashlyn Martin, followed by a solo shot from Haleigh Wambolt (pictured) in the top of the seventh to knot the contest at 10 runs apiece.

Unfortunately, the Spirit capped the win with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Wambolt finished the game hitting 3-for-4 with three RBI and Riley Peeler went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Ashlyn Martin added two hits and three RBI.

Sara Martin (1-3) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 13 hits while striking out four batters in a complete game.

GAME TWO: Ottawa 8, Bushnell 2

The Spirit took care of business in the night cap behind eight hits, scoring in five of their six innings and putting the game away with a three-run first that featured a pair of home runs.

Bushnell scored both of their runs in the top of the second on an RBI double from Brenna Wilson and an RBI single from Makenzie Alexander.

Alexander went 2-for-4 in the game while Wambolt did as well, completing a 5-for-8 day at the dish.

Violet Richardson (1-1) took the loss in the circle, allowing the three first-inning runs in her only inning of work.

UP NEXT: The Beacons will come back to Oregon next weekend, heading north to face off against Western Oregon on January 21st in a double-header, scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
