Wolves Take Two From Bushnell

MONMOUTH, Ore. -  The Western Oregon University softball team took a pair of wins on Saturday in their home openers, sweeping the double-header from the Beacons, 7-5 and 4-3.

GAME ONE: Western Oregon 7, Bushnell 5

The Beacons would go ahead early in the morning contest, scoring a run on an RBI single by Brenna Wilson in the second inning. Riley Peeler and Ashlyn Martin added back-to-back RBI doubles in the third to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

The Wolves roared back, however, tying the game with a three-run fourth before posting four unearned runs in the sixth inning after Beacon defensive problems when led to three Bushnell errors.

Sara Martin (1-4) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters in six innings of work. Bushnell out-hit WOU in the game 13-11 as Peeler went 3-for-4 in the game. Makenzie Alexander, Martin, and Gracie Hamilton added two hits apiece, with Hamilton giving the Beacons a two-run single as they tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh.

GAME TWO: Western Oregon 5, Bushnell 4

The nightcap saw the Wolves be the ones with the early advantage while the Beacons were playing from behind, tying the game at 3-3 with a three-run third. Maddy Fullenwider punched through a two-run single and Hamilton followed with a sacrifice fly.

It was defense that plagued the Beacons yet again, as Western Oregon was able to claim the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a play that included a pair of errors.

Sara Martin (1-5) took the tough-luck loss after four solid innings of relief work, striking out a pair and allowing just the final unearned run.

UP NEXT: Weather-permitting, the Beacons will come home on Sunday to play host to Pacific University for their final non-conference double-header, beginning at 12:00 pm. Stay tuned to BushnellBeacons.com and the Beacons Instagram account for any changes as a large stormfront is anticipated in the Willamette Valley on Sunday.
