EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell baseball team suffered their first double-header sweep on Saturday as Saint Martin's University was able to finish an even split for the weekend series with a pair of victories.
Â
GAME ONE: Saint Martin's 7, Bushnell 5
Â
Bushnell out-hit the Saints 10-6 in the opener, but spotted SMU a 6-2 lead after a six-run top of the second inning. Starter
Jacob Courtney (1-1) struggled with his control and allowed five runs on just one hit as he walked five batters in just 1.1 innings of work.
Â
DJ Kauahi and
Griffin Sanchez came in to provide some much needed relief, combining to strike out six batters over 7.2 innings and keep the Beacons alive. Sanchez allowed just one hit over the final 3.1 innings of work.
Â
The Beacons had scored a pair in the first inning, on an RBI single for Jennings and a fielders choice for
Dylan Carson (pictured) and added another on a
Max Richards single in the second. In the third, Carson crushed the first of his two homers on the day to bring Bushnell within a run, but they were never able to get control.
Â
Richards finished the game hitting 3-for-4 while
Nate Stevens and
Chase Nye added two hits apiece.
Â
GAME TWO: Saint Martin's 13, Bushnell 10 (10 Innings)
Â
A usually stout Bushnell defense, which had committed just nine errors through their first 11 games, told a much different story in the night cap with a season-high five errors. This included two miscues in the top of the tenth inning, allowing three unearned runs to come home and costing the Beacons a victory.
Â
The defense spoiled an otherwise strong day of offense as the Beacons collected 12 hits including six doubles and Carson's second homer, and gave it away after the Beacons had rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a Stevens double and
Mana Heffernan game-tying single.
Â
Kai Keamo started the game for the Beacons and went four innings, striking out eight batters. Four relievers came in to throw the final five innings, giving up just one earned run. The loss went to
Jahshua Yacapin (2-1), despite a strong two-inning effort that included three K's and no earned runs on just one hit.
Â
Leading the offense with a three-hit day was
Josh Miyazawa, adding two RBI. The senior utility man tied a school record with seven at-bats in the contest from the leadoff spot.
Albert Jennings went 3-for-5 in the game.
Â
UP NEXT: The Beacons (7-6) will continue a 12-game homestand next weekend as they open up Cascade Collegiate Conference action against Warner Pacific University (2-3). The teams will play back-to-back double-headers on Friday and Saturday with the first three games counting toward the CCC slate. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Friday.
