Thunderbirds Sweep to Open Conference Play

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Offense was at a premium, and Bushnell struggled to find it on Saturday, falling twice to the University of British Columbia to open up Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

GAME ONE: British Columbia 6, Bushnell 0

UBC put together three runs in the third inning, adding more in the fifth and six to support a combined one-hit shutout from pitchers Carleen Murray and Riley Woodward.

Murray (3-1) went 6.1 innings with six strikeouts, giving up the only hit in the sixth inning, a single from Brenna Wilson to end the no-hit bid.

Sara Martin (3-1) took the loss for the Beacons, allowing three earned runs on five hits in five innings of work. Emily Cole struck out three batters and gave up one run in the final two innings.

UBC's seven hits were scattered among six batters with Casey Lo going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

GAME TWO: British Columbia 2, Bushnell 1

Violet Richardson hit her third home run of the season to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning, but the second game of the day was all about pitching as UBC's Shae Sever and Bushnell's Cole went toe-to-toe.

Sever (2-1) threw 4.1 innings, striking out eight Beacons before giving way to Murray who returned for the final 2.2 innings, giving up just one hit to record her first save.

Cole (2-3) went the distance and struck out five batters and just one earned run in taking the loss.

Jessica Heutink was the only T-Bird with multiple hits, while Clare VonSpall hit an RBI double in the third for the go-ahead run. For the Beacons, Riley Peeler went 2-for-4 with a double.

UP NEXT: The Beacons (5-5, 0-2 CCC) and Thunderbirds (5-2, 2-0) will play two more on Sunday, beginning at 11:00 am.
