Mounties Use Perimeter Shooting to Beat the Beacons

EUGENE, Ore. – A three-game winning streak was shuttered on Saturday as the Beacons were defeated by Eastern Oregon University in women's basketball action, 82-63.

Bushnell (9-13, 8-8 CCC) was looking to jump into a fourth-place tie with the Mounties with a victory but instead slip back to the sixth-place spot they held before the weekend. This despite pulling out to an early five points lead.

Eastern Oregon (14-7, 10-6) quickly responded to the deficit, using the deep ball and strong all-around shooting to take a 24-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and never look back. The Mounties finished the night shooting 47% from the field including an 11-for-26 night from three-point range.

Kelsie Siegner did the most damage, going 6-for-9 from beyond the arch and finishing with a game-high 27 points. Brie Holocek was the only other starter in double figures for the visitors, scoring 11 points while Mya Alvarado came off the bench to score ten, leading a reserves effort that scored 36 points off the bench.

The Beacons shot 45% in the game, but couldn't get the job done outside as they went just 2-for-11 from three. Libby Mathis led the way for the offense with 15 points and eight rebounds, although her school-record run of seven straight double-digit rebounding performances came to an end. Ellis Mastel added 13 points while Taylor Reed came off the bench to score nine.

"Eastern Oregon is a tough matchup for us," said Head Coach Chad Meadors. "We broke down defensively and we don't normally break down. They can really shoot it on the perimeter and they got it going tonight. We needed a few calls to go our way early to keep us in the game and that just didn't happen either."

Bushnell will hit the road for the next two weekends, beginning on Friday, February 8 in Klamath Falls against Oregon Tech at 5:30 pm. "We have build some great momentum over the last few weeks with a three-game winning streak and now we'll just build toward the rest of the season. It is always a battle, and we have a lot of basketball left in front of us. We have a great opportunity to use what happened tonight and grow from it."
