SALEM, Ore. – Senior
Cory Johnson became the 25th member of Bushnell's 1000-point club on Tuesday night as the Beacons opened up Cascade Collegiate Conference action with an 86-67 victory over Corban University.
The Beacons (4-4, 1-0 CCC) shot 50% in the game and out-scored the Warriors 53-39 in a dominant second-half, helping them claim their biggest win over their rivals in 11 years.
Head Coach
Eddie Alexander said, "I am super proud of the guys and how they executed on both ends of the floor tonight. The game ball, though, goes to Assistant Coach
Jordan Alexander for being so dialed in on the scouting report. Our guys knew everything that they were running tonight. I was very proud of how we responded to start conference."
Coming into the game with 997 career points, Johnson crossed the threshold at the 8:43 mark of the first half with a game-tying three-pointer. He went on to score 25 points off the bench to lead all players as he shot 9-for-14 from the field.
Now with 1022 points in his career, he passes Javonte Byrd for 23rd on Bushnell's all-time scoring list. He is eighth among players in the NAIA-era.
"Cory's development from his freshman year until now has been fun to watch," said Alexander. "He is an offensive juggernaut when we set him loose, but his game has really begun to take the next iteration into an all-around player. His contribution to our program has been immense in terms of work ethic. He is an example of what every college player should be in regards to routine and physical discipline. He knows how much we love him and appreciate him, but he has got more to give and we are going to keep working.
"We came into the game knowing their scout very well," said Johnson. "For the whole 40 minutes we were all locked in on the defensive end, disrupted them, and never gave them a chance to get into a rhythm or gain any momentum. Offensively, we executed very well and got great shots."
Kaleb Burnett added 17 points and seven rebounds while
Roy Bunn and
Squeeky Johnson contributed 11 points apiece.
Ashton Harvey led the team with eight boards as Bushnell out-rebounded the Warriors 40-36.
Corban (4-4, 0-1) was led by TJ Zimmerman, scoring 22 points. Joe Gould was the only other Warrior in double-figures with 13 while Anjay Cortez collected game highs with 11 rebounds and four assists.
UP NEXT: The Beacons, in the midst of an eight-game road trip, will be back in action on Saturday at 5:00 pm when they head to Portland for their next CCC contest against Warner Pacific (4-3).
