EUGENE, Ore. –  The Bushnell volleyball team hasn't lost to Walla Walla University since 2015, but the Wolves came within striking distance of end the 15-game series losing streak on Friday with the Beacons pulling out a 25-16, 12-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12 victory.
Â
Walla Walla's impressive outside hitting duo of Sahara Browning and Natalie Jimenez combined for 30 kills on 91 swings, giving the Beacons all they could handle. After a brutal second set, in which the Wolves (6-5, 5-4 CCC) posted 19 kills and hit .562, Bushnell made all the necessary adjustments and survived as they held WWU to a .000 attack in the fifth set.
"This was a gritty win against an agressive team," said head coach
Jason Corwin. "Walla Walla scores points and plays to the whistle. We were challenged tonight and made the plays at the time we needed it most."
Â
The Beacons (10-6, 5-3) were behind in nearly every statistical category on Friday as the Wolves held a 57-54 advantage in kills, 70-63 edge in digs and a 7-4 margin in blocks. It was at the service line once again where Bushnell emerged, holding a 13-7 lead in service aces behind four from
Amyah Semau and three apiece from
Julia Cook and
Katie Belitz.
Â
Semau did a little of everything for the Beacons in the win. Starting the night with the Libero jersey and finishing as a six-rotation hitter over the final three sets, she collected 11 kills and nine digs.
Hailey Heider finished her night with a double-double, posting 14 digs and a match-high 20 kills, hitting .318.
Â
Elijah Sanders led the Beacons with 24 assists and
Bella Parque scored a match-high 24 digs in the victory.
Â
Browning finished with 18 kills and 14 digs for the Wolves while Natalie Jimenez scored 12 kills and 13 digs. Femke Eising hit .333 with 11 kills and three blocks while Kiana Cueto secured seven kills and a match-high four blocks. Idalis Bedore earned 16 digs to lead WWU while Danielle Faamausili registered a match-high 33 assists.
Â
Bushnell plays host to Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday at 5:00 pm to close out their weekend while the Wolves travel to play at No. 9 Corban in a 9:00 pm match. Â
