EUGENE, Ore. – Scoring with under ten minutes to play, the Corban Warriors ended their own four-game losing streak and put the breaks on Bushnell's four-game winning streak, taking a 2-1 win in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both schools.
Bushnell (4-1-1) controlled a good portion of the action on Thursday, finishing with a 19-10 advantage in shots, including a 13-3 swing in the second half, where they also had a 5-1 margin in corner kicks. The Beacons took twice as many shots-on-goal in the contest, but the final score showed twice as many goals for the Warriors (2-4, 1-0).
Head Coach
Joao Ehlers said, "We struggled technically tonight and made some collective mistakes that really influenced the final result of the match. If we want to be successful in this league, we will have to learn from our mistakes and improve offensively to make sure we score the opportunities we create."
Corban struck first, claiming the only goal of the first half in the 29th minute as Bryan Lopez struck pay dirt from the edge of the 18-yard box off a pass from Jose Guzman.
Bushnell found the equalizer in the 65th minute when a cross from
Javier Gutierrez floated into the box and
Jesus Aguilar headed in a beauty as he went up for the 50/50 with the Corban keeper.
Heartbreak came for the Beacons in the 81st minute, when a long pass from Irwin Leo created a breakaway and Guzman found Zachary Milczarek, scoring the game-winner.
The Beacons remain at home next weekend and will face off against the NAIA's No. 22-ranked Southern Oregon University Raiders on Friday at 2:30 pm.
