Beacons Celebrate Seniors, Split Series with (RV) Oregon Tech

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. –Bushnell took advantage of an uncharacteristic eight-error game from Oregon Tech in the night cap, salvaging a series split in a battle of Cascade Collegiate Conference playoff teams on Senior Day.

The Beacons (25-20, 12-8 CCC) dropped the morning contest, 4-2 before blowing past the Owls, 12-4 in the night cap. Oregon Tech, currently receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll, moved up to second-place in the CCC and kept their hopes of a second straight conference title alive.

Game One: Oregon Tech 4, Bushnell 2

OIT lead-off hitter Matt Ortiz was a thorn in Bushnell's side in the opener, responsible for every run in game and all coming with two outs. The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Ortiz's two-run double. Then in the sixth he claimed an RBI triple and scored on the play after an errant throw attempting to get him out at third.

The Beacons trailed 4-1 at that point and were only able to get back one of the runs in the bottom of the sixth, on a pinch-hit RBI single by Jameson Hussey.

Bushnell had a strong day on the mound to keep themselves in the game. Nate Rasmussen (1-2) went four innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Senior Alec Gums followed up with four strong innings, allowing one earned and striking out three. Jayden Soriano closed things out with a perfect ninth.

Isaac Hill (3-2) was equally impressive in his start for Oregon Tech, giving up two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings while striking out five. Riley Cronin later closed the door, recording six outs to pick up his second save on the season.

Albert Jennings went 3-for-5 in the game for the Beacons with a double while Isaiah Hart batted 2-for-3.

Game Two: Bushnell 12, Oregon Tech 4

Playing in the final regular-season home game of his career, Daniel Furman went 5-for-5 at the plate and collected three RBI to lift Bushnell to the victory. Jordan Wilson added two hits of his own, including his 13th home run of the season, and also had three RBI.

Tied 3-3 after two innings, Bushnell was able to bust things open in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs on three hits as they benefitted from three of Oregon Tech's eight errors.

Austin Wolfe (4-0) struck out five batters over five innings and gave up three earned runs to record the victory. The Beacon bullpen was stellar once again as Garrett Vohs, Adam Sabatino, and Blake Stavros combined to allow just one hit over the final four innings, striking out four more batters.

For the Owls, Cody Dubray (3-2) took the loss after pitching the first 2.2 innings. He allowed six hits and walked three batters, although just two of his nine runs allowed were earned.

Up Next: The Beacons will be in McMinnville on Tuesday to take on Linfield University in their final non-conference game of the season at 4:00 pm. Then, next weekend Bushnell closes out the regular season on the road at CCC leader Lewis-Clark State College, who the Beacons won three-of-four from during the non-conference portion of the schedule. While Bushnell is out of championship contention, they have plenty to play for with an opportunity to finish as high as second-place in the Cascade Conference.
