Beacons Drop Pair of One-Run Games

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – No. 22-ranked College of Idaho continued a 20-game winning streak against the Beacons on Saturday, but not without a fight as Bushnell pushed the Yotes to extra innings in game one and dropped a pitching duel in game two.

The Beacons move to 6-13 overall, 1-4 in the CCC while the Yotes improve to 13-7 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.

GAME ONE: College of Idaho 9, Bushnell 8 (8 Innings)

A five-run fourth inning put Bushnell in control in the CCC-counting half of the double-header, but CI would tie the game before eventually winning in the eighth inning.

Trailing 5-1 early, Bushnell took their first lead of the weekend as they scored five runs on just three hits in the fourth. Hannah Wambolt put down a successful sacrifice squeeze bunt to bring home Violet Richardson, who had doubled to start the inning. After a run scored on an uncharacteristic error by the Yote defense, the Beacons tied things up on a pinch-hit two-run single from Breanna Hilton. A bases-loaded wild pitch then put Bushnell ahead, 6-5.

College of Idaho tied the contest in the sixth on a Lolo Walker RBI double. Walker had already produced a two-run triple back in the fourth.

The game moved to extra innings and the Yotes seemed to put the game on ice with three runs as they got an RBI double from Lexi Navarette, who soon scored as part of a two-run single by Madelyn Powell.

Bushnell trailed 9-6 going into the bottom of the eighth but made a run at it. With one out, Hannah Tennant reached on a hit-by-pitch before Molly Haley picked up a pinch-hit single through the left side of the infield. Halliday Hubbard followed with a single to load the bases.

Madison Steelman followed with an RBI single up the middle and a Tierra Dumlao sacrifice fly brought the Beacons to within 9-8, before reliever Abbey Brooks secured her first save of the season by getting the final out.

When the dust had settled, Ambrie Jones (1-0) secured the win, striking out three batters in 4.1 innings of relief. Liz Hillier (2-4) went the distance for the Beacons, striking out four batters but giving up six walks and nine earned runs on 12 hits.

Hubbard went 3-for-4 for the Beacons while Faith Wayman collected two hits and Montanah Love scored three times.

GAME TWO: College of Idaho 1, Bushnell 0

After combining for 22 hits in the first game, the teams went the opposite direction in the night cap, as both Brooks for the Yotes and Emily Cole for the Beacons went the distance, giving up a combined 11 hits in a good old-fashioned pitching duel.

The only run of the game came early with the C of I scoring on an RBI single in the first inning. Cole (3-7) allowed just three hits the rest of the way and struck out five batters in a hard-luck loss.

Bushnell out-hit the Yotes in the game, scattering six singles against Brooks (3-4). The Beacons only put three batters in scoring position and never reached third base.

Hubbard added two more hits to her 5-hit day to highlight the Beacon efforts at the plate while Hannah Mikel and Kamryn Ham collected two hits apiece for the visitors.

Bushnell will be back in action next weekend as they hit the road for Montana to take on Carroll College (3-12-1, 0-5 CCC) beginning Friday at 12:00 pm Mountain time.
