Beacons and Yotes Split CCC Series

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Bushnell University and the College of Idaho split Saturday's Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader at the Hamlin Sports Complex. The Beacons took the first game, 3-2, and the Yotes ended the series with an 8-4 victory.

With the series split, the Beacons moved to 18-14 overall and 6-2 in CCC play. The Yotes are now 11-23 overall and 2-6 in conference action.

Game 1: Bushnell 3, College of Idaho 2

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, Bushnell held the College of Idaho scoreless the rest of the way. Jack Ingraham picked up both RBIs on a two-out infield single, scoring Alex McFarland-Smith and Chandler Stocking, who beat out the throw at home.

The Beacons didn't take long to tie it up in the bottom half as Ethan Stacy hit an RBI-triple down the right field line before scoring on a passed ball.

The game remained tied at 2-2 over the next five innings thanks in part to a pair of web gems by Albert Jennings and Caleb Richter, both in right center. Jennings made a run-saving catch to end the fourth and Richter covered a lot of ground in his diving catch to get the second out in the fifth.

The go-ahead run came across in the bottom of the seventh for the Beacons. Reece Carganilla led off the frame with a single, Jennings reached on an error and both runners advanced when a failed pickoff attempt at second ended up in the outfield. Jordan Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to bring home pinch runner Kai Keamo for the 3-2 lead.

Colby Knutzen recorded his fifth save of the year after giving up just one hit in the final 1.1 innings. Alec Gums (2-2) got the win, throwing a scoreless three innings for the Beacons.

Dawson Cummins (0-5) had a strong outing for the Yotes, throwing all eight innings. Cummins took the loss despite giving up just one earned run on eight hits with nine strikeouts.

Game 2: College of Idaho 8, Bushnell 4

The Yotes used a five-run eighth to get the comeback victory in the final game and force a series split. Jordan Kelly finished off the weekend with a 5-for-6, three-RBI game. McFarland-Smith also drove in three runs on a pair of hits.

Wilson got the first run on the board for Bushnell with a solo homer off the scoreboard in right center in the bottom of the second. The Yotes went up 3-1 in the fifth off singles by Kelly, McFarland and Stocking.

Bushnell took back the lead in the sixth, hitting two home runs in the frame. Isaiah Hart cut the deficit to one with a solo shot to left before Wilson hit his second homer of the game, this time a two-run blast over the left field fence.

The Yotes sent 11 batters to the plate in the five-run eighth before retiring the next six Beacons for the four-run victory. Jackson Cummins (1-2) earned the win on the mound, giving up just one hit in the final three innings.
