Beacons Drop Two Games at Jessup

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Jessup University took both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 5-2 and 6-3, to win the non-conference series over the Bushnell University baseball team.

Head Coach Tommy Richards said, "It was a great learning opportunity for the Beacons today. We will take the good and the bad from the series and figure out the best path forward. Thanks to Beacon nation for showing up. The support was awesome!"

Due to the weather delay on Friday and travel time constraints, the Beacons (1-2) and Warriors (6-1) played two seven-inning games today.

Game 1: Jessup 5, Bushnell 2

The Warriors struck first, scoring on a two-out throwing error in the bottom of the first. Jordan Wilson got the Beacons on the board in the top of the third with a single up the middle, bringing home Ethan Stacy to make it a 1-1 game. Jessup then answered with a five-hit bottom half to go up 4-1.

Both sides scored in the sixth, keeping the deficit at three but the Warriors held off the Beacons in the seventh to even on the series.

Bushnell was led by a 3-for-4 performance from Cade Crist and two hits apiece from Stacy and Wilson. Wilson and Liam Kerr each drove in a run with singles.

Max Chapman (0-1) got his first start with the Beacons, going 2.1 innings. Taiga Yamane threw 3.1 innings in relief, striking out six on the day with no earned runs, and Adam Sabatino faced one batter in the sixth, forcing a flyout.

Nolan Thebiay (2-0) got the win on the mound for the Warriors, allowing one run on six hits in 4.2 innings of work. Haliama Swartman recorded a save, giving up just two hits in the final 1.2 innings.

Game 2: Jessup 6, Bushnell 3

The Beacons held a 3-2 edge after the first inning of game two, starting it off with another leadoff homer from Stacy. Stacy also hit a first-inning leadoff homer in the season opener on Friday. Brandon Reed hit a two-run single later in the frame before the Warriors cut the lead to one in the bottom half.

Both sides were held scoreless until a three-run homer from James Williams III in the bottom of the sixth put Jessup up 5-3. The Warriors held the Beacons hitless in the seventh to take the series win.

Bushnell was held to four hits with two coming off the bat of Reed. Stacy and Crist made up the other two hits. Six Beacon pitchers saw the mound, including Marques Brown, who threw a hitless 1.2 innings of relief.

Trevor Arntson and Ryan Stone (1-0) combined for nine strikeouts. Stone threw 3.1 innings in relief, not allowing a hit in the outing.

Up Next:  The Beacons will travel back to California to take on Simpson University in a three-game series on Feb. 9-10.
