Nine-Run Inning Lifts Beacons to a Series Win

REDDING, Calif. – The Bushnell University baseball team took home a series win over Simpson University on Saturday, using a nine-run seventh inning to complete a monumental comeback on the road.

Trailing 6-0 in the top of the fifth, Cade Crist put the Beacons on the board with a solo shot over the fence. The Red Hawks put up four more in the bottom of the fifth to extend their advantage to 10-1.

Bushnell entered the top of the seventh down 10-2 before the nine-run, seven-hit inning ensued. An RBI-single off the bat of Ethan Stacy scored the first run of the frame, bringing home pinch-runner Kai Keamo. Jordan Wilson used a one-out single to load the bases and Albert Jennings followed with a bases-clearing double to cut the deficit to 10-6.

Jennings crossed home on a single from Brendan Frazier. A walk and a wild pitch put two more runners in scoring position and Chase Nye drove in them both with a double to make it a one-run game, 10-9. Nye stole third and scored on an error to tie the game at 10-10.

A hit batter and a walk put two more runners on before Brandon Reed stepped up to the plate with two outs and a chance to take the lead. Reed delivered with an RBI-single, bringing home Carganilla, the ninth and final run of the inning.

Adam Sabatino (1-0) pitched the next two innings, facing the minimum. Colby Knutzen came in to get the save, as the duo shut down the Red Hawks in the final three frames.

Sabatino said, "Our offense put together some great at bats to put us into a winning situation. I was thankful to get the call and shut it down in the later innings."

Bushnell (3-3) recorded 18 hits on the game with three coming off the bat of Jennings. Stacy, Reed, Wilson, Frazier, Caleb Richter, Nye and Carganilla contributed two hits apiece.

Nye said, "We started the game off slow but kept faith the whole time. In my at bat, I was just trying to pass the torch and bring some energy. We didn't play our game early, but we found a way to get the job done and come out with a win."

Simpson (2-9) was led by four RBI from Logan Gomes and Maximiliano Lopez. Gomes recorded two home runs for the Red Hawks.

Up Next: Bushnell takes on Pacific Lutheran University in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 17.
